NAC - Glenmeal Maple Lane Farm Woods Walk

NAC – Special Event: Glenmeal Maple Lane Farm

Northern Adirondack Members of NYFOA and all forest enthusiasts are invited to participate in a woods walk on Saturday August 17, 2019 at the Glenmeal Maple Lane Farm located at 673 Glenmeal Road in the Town of Pierrepont in St. Lawrence County Commencing at 9:00 am.This 230 acre property owned by Scott and Donna Bonno has 210 woodland acres and has been managed by the current owners since the late 1980's. The Bonno family is only the second surname to hold the deed since the civil war.

Glenmeal Maple Lane farm has exercised two commercial timber harvests in recent years along with the occasional pulpwood sale or salvage operation. The owners remove 100 cords of fuel wood annually as a byproduct of their silvicultural practices. A 65 HP farm tractor equipped with a cable winch and bucket or pallet forks with a hydraulic clam is the work horse for the farm. The process also utilizes a wood splitter with a hydraulic lift.

Maple syrup has a long tradition on the property with two separate sap houses having been located on the property during the 19th and 20th centuries.Scott built a new sugar house in 1994 but has since ceased making syrup and now sells sap to area syrup makers which is collected at roadside tanks from a natural gravity 3/16” tubing system.

Scott is recently retired and stays very active on the farm. He continues to work on a project to grow young forest with a focus on propagating Red Oak and Bitter nut Hickory. Broadcast spreading or hand plunging acorns and Hickory nuts and installing tree tubes highlight this endeavor. Scott also monitors 50 selected hardwoods by taking a diameter growth measurement each year.

Please join us for the day which will feature two sessions in the forest. The morning session will highlight a young sugarbush growing on a site which was clear cut between 1961 and 1975 and shows some of the residual effects of “Ice Storm '98”. The afternoon session will visit the harvest site of large sugar maple completed in February of 2019 and proceed through a stand of mixed forest which was thinned in 1987. Mike Corse a local mushroom grower will discuss how he grows mushrooms and makes his living selling to area restaurants and local markets. NYSDEC forester Steve Sherwood will speak about Emerald Ash Borer, Forest Tent Caterpillar and Spotted Lantern Fly.A “build your own“ sandwich style lunch with beverages and light desert will be provided.

The woods walk will total a distance of approximately 1.5 miles on terrain which is generally easy to moderate in degree of difficulty. We will be on good walking trails which will accommodate off road golf carts or ATV's. Attendees must bring their own transportation if they prefer to not walk.

Participants should pre-register by contacting Scott Bonno @ 315-854-7788 or preferably by email at glenmeal@yahoo.com. Please bring a friend, weather appropriate gear and footwear for the day.
