WFL (Western Finger Lakes)
News and Events
Congratulations to Mike Seager- 2010 WFL Chapter Service Award winner!
Mike Seager was chosen to receive the Western Finger Lakes; NYFOA Chapter Activity Award for 2010. The Chapter Activity Award was instituted to thank a volunteer “individual, couple or family” from each chapter for helping the chapter reach members and other private woodland owners in the area. Mike and his father Maurice Seager joined NYFOA in 2001. Their property consists of 180 acres located in the Towns of Nunda and Grove, Livingston & Alleghany Counties; of which Mike is the fifth generation owner. Mike has been very active in the WFL Chapter, volunteering and arranging many of our activities that promote good stewardship to forest owners. He was a major contributor at the Forestry Forum held in Newark this past spring and is currently working on another session. Mike has been a WFL Board Member nearly as long as he has been a member and has served our chapter as both a designated director to the state board and as President of the NYFOA State Board. Award was presented to Mike by Dale Schaefer at the 2011 Annual Memberhship Meeting.
Upcoming Events:
Welcome to 2012! We hope your year is off to a good start. Here are some upcoming events in the Western Finger Lakes chapter and surrounding area. Many events are free and open to the public. Please share this message with anyone who might be interested.
Please note: New York state has a new industry that is growing rapidly, hops. Hops are grown on 18 ft high trellises. Each acre requires about 65 poles 22 ft long and 8-10 inches in diameter. Approximately 2,000 poles will be needed in spring 2012 and more in 2013. Preferred species are larch, cedar and black locust. Plantings are going in all across the state so local delivery or pick up is a plus. Anyone who might be able to supply such poles should contact Steve Miller, Cornell University Cooperative Extension Hops Specialist at 315 684-3001 x127 or sgm6@cornell.edu
