NYFOA CNY Chapter Annual Picnic
Sunday August 22, 2010 at 12 Noon
Pomeroy’s Pavilion on Sentinel Heights Road
We have had a hot summer and there is no reason to believe that it won’t continue through August and our Annual Picnic. Our Chapter has been fortunate so far this year to have three well attended woods walks at Stearns Sugar Bush eating pancakes, Cuyler Hill State Forest with Ralph Nyland on uneven-age management, and Christensen woodlot with the hay ride to hell and back (we did see a preemptive ash salvage harvest too).
We are going to end the summer with our Annual Picnic on Sunday August 22, 2010 beginning at 12 noon at Pomeroy’s woodlot on Sentinel Heights Road. There is a pavilion on top of a hill overlooking the whole valley. We will have the picnic come rain or shine, and a woods walk after. We will be led by Rich Taber and Jamie Christensen pointing out the uniqueness of this old farmland which is being transformed to a forest. There are closed canopy stands which were never cleared for farming and a sugar bush made but not ever used.
We will begin our picnic at 12 noon with the woods walk starting around 1 PM. As we have done in the past the Chapter will provide meat and drinks and we ask everyone to bring a dish to pass. We will have paper & plastic to use so if you want china – bring your own. We need to have an idea how many are coming so if you could RSVP to Jamie Christensen 472-5323 Home, 427-3156 Cell, kchriste@twcny.rr.com, or Peter Cann, we will have enough of everything.
Directions to 3355 Sentinel Heights Road, Lafayette:
From Syracuse, I-81 south to Nedrow exit, turn left (south) on Rt. 11. Just past the on-ramp to I-81 north, take first left (east) on short access road to stop sign. Turn right (south) on Kennedy Road and go about ½ mile. Take first left (west) up hill on Bull Hill Road to top of hill. At stop sign turn right (south) on Sentinel Heights Road. In about a mile, past Tennessee Gas, turn right (west) at 3355 Sentinel Heights Road onto gravel road. Look for NYFOA sign at the entrance. Follow road to top of hill and the pavilion, which can be seen from Sentinel Heights Road.
Congratulations to Peter Cann! Peter has been awarded the CNY 2009 Chapter Service Award.
Peter is a 25 year member of NYFOA and has served as Chapter secretary for several years. He is a MFO and Regional Coordinator for the last two years. He and Nancy live on a 70 acre Certified Tree Farm on the hills overlooking the Canaseraga Creek Valley in Madison County. They have hosted multiple woods walks showing the improvements on their woodlot including the planting of 8000 nursery trees with Norway and White spruce, Douglas fir and Larch, which are now 30 feet tall. Their 35 acres of hardwoods were thinned 8years ago. The land has 2.5 miles of roads and five ponds. Green energy improvements on their property with the goal of becoming NetZero (a house running totally on renewable energy) include geothermal, windmill, solar panels, and future plans to add a micro turbine to harness and make electricity from a pond outlet.
Peter is associated with Habitant for Humanity, Chittenango Rotary, Link Trail Association, and the Madison County Search & Rescue Team. Many thanks to Peter!
